If you are annoyed by the inability of the federal government to purchase a vaccine, construct a submarine, subsidise a rapid antigen test, or engage in anything cooperative, then do not visit the Dartmouth Dam. It will annoy you further.

It was finished in 1979 as a joint project between the Commonwealth and 3 states, and would have no chance of being built today.

Instead, the Feds would wait for a drought to appear, and then breathlessly announce that 25 million bottles of water had been “secured” from Poland. The bottles would take three months to arrive and be distributed exclusively at selected Harvey Norman™ stores.

The water would not be free because bugger it, too hard. In the meantime we would be encouraged to take Personal Responsibility™ for obtaining hydration—which, generally speaking, means knocking your investment property tenants on the head and extracting what fluids remain from the corpses.

Sadly this was not the case. It had lots to say about the means of production (but I already knew what that was, namely an entire block of cheese consumed a few hours earlier) but very little to say about the means of disposal. To make matters worse this was a decidedly bourgeois cheese; its overthrow would take some time.

Like the morning poo’s unwanted ten o’clock sequel, the origins of Nathalia are shrouded in mystery. Weighing into the debate is no less an authority than the Nathalia Motel and Caravan Park, which says that the town is named for Tsar Peter the Great’s mother, Natalya Naryshkina.

This makes sense because Nathalia was founded in 1880, right around the time when Russia was a dangerous hotbed of far-left extremism. The sleepy plains of northern Victoria must’ve seemed like paradise for Tsarist émigrés escaping the chaos of the motherland.

But the tides of history must eventually wash over us all, and the Russian revolution finally came to Nathalia in 1939, when the local water authority (a notable nest of communists) erected this decidedly Stalinist water tower, right in the centre of town.
